Depending on the individual’s situation, a hummingbird feeder may be hung at a low height; however, no height is safer than 6 or 7 feet.

Keep in mind that while it is possible to hang a hummingbird feeder at a lower height, this is not the safest option. There could be no pests or predators in the yard, or the light could be too intense, both of which would necessitate hanging the feeder low to the ground. The ideal height is 5–6 feet, with a minimum of 4 feet.

Hummingbird feeders can be hung up to a foot off the ground if you are able to keep an eye on them at all times.

A hummingbird feeder must be hung at least 5 to 6 feet off the ground if you do not want to watch the tiny birds as they enter and exit the feeder.

Even though it depends on where you hang it, hummingbird feeders are completely secure in my opinion.

The best place, in my opinion, to put a hummingbird feeder is in a yard where the birds won’t be disturbed by people or animals.

If you want to attract hummingbirds, you should hang your feeder on a pole, and the recommended height for a hummingbird feeder is four to five feet.

However, the carefully calibrated height of any commercially produced bird feeding station pole is not a guarantee that hummers will be safe.

Everything here is up to you and the conditions in your backyard. A hummingbird feeder can never remain undisturbed by predators, dogs, or wildlife pests. And that’s significant since protecting the hummers’ lives should be your top priority.

Hummingbird feeders should only be hung at ground level if you are certain that doing so would not endanger the birds or anybody around.

Low hanging feeder unsafe

A low-hanging hummingbird feeder may or may not be dangerous depending on the specifics of your situation, but it’s best to err on the side of caution.

Even if you follow the guidelines for how high to place a hummingbird feeder (about 5 or 6 feet), it may not be safe depending on your property and the animals and people who frequent there.

For example, if you hang a hummingbird feeder on a bird feeder pole, it will be three to four feet above the ground; at this height, neither squirrels nor late-night guests will be able to reach it.

Wild animals may jump up to three or four feet in order to reach the sweet nectar they can smell, while pet birds can only reach a maximum of two or three inches inside feeders.

Ultimately, you can only rely on your own circumstances; if you don’t have any pets, that’s fantastic, and if you know for sure that there aren’t any predators or pests lurking in your backyard, either during the day or at night, that’s even better.

If there is no risk of animals, dogs, or even children coming into touch with the feeder, you can hang the feeder low in your yard to attract hummingbirds.

Remember that a hummingbird feeder doesn’t need to be hung from anything; in fact, you can put it on a table in your yard if you’re willing to keep an eye on things to make sure it stays undisturbed.

Hummingbird feeder is safer higher up

In most cases, a height of at least 5 or 6 feet above the ground is the optimal place to hang a hummingbird feeder.

We can confidently provide a minimum distance of 5-6 feet between the bottom of the hummingbird feeder and the floor.

I’ll still try to hang the hummingbird feeder at a height of 6-7 feet from the ground, because I know that no animal or human will ever be able to reach it there.

Despite the fact that hummingbird feeders can be hung in direct sunlight, it may be preferable to hang them lower to the ground so that they receive more shade than direct sunlight.

Even yet, the best place to put a hummingbird feeder in any North American backyard is likely still up high, where the birds will be safest.

Some hummers may not even see your feeder if it is too high up on a pole or bracket, but they will still come to rely on it as they fly overhead.

Hummingbirds have a preference for feeders at a certain height inside a yard, and if you place it too low, they may still not find it.

If you have to hang it low, do it in a well-lit area; otherwise, keep it as high as possible, since this will continue to be the safest alternative.

Minimum 4 feet off ground

Hummingbird feeders should be hung at least four feet from the ground, as this is the minimum safe distance.

Why four feet? Because it’s high enough to keep tiny dogs and cats out of reach, and it keeps most children who don’t know better safely out of reach.

Always have in mind Even though it’s higher than the ground, a height of 4 feet is still low enough that even squirrels can reach it.

As I indicated before, a hummingbird feeder may be set up on any flat surface outside, such a porch railing or a piece of garden furniture. A hummingbird feeder can be hung at this height, or even lower, depending on the situation.

Hummingbird feeders need to be hung from branches at least 4 feet off the ground in order to attract hummers, although often the lowest branch available is the best option.

Hummingbird feeders are fine as long as they are not disturbed by humans, animals, or other pets, but if they are, that’s a sign they’re hung too low.

In addition, if the hummingbird feeder is placed too low, it may brush against the grass or shrubs in the yard, making it impossible to prevent ants or other insects from reaching the nectar.

When hung too low is allowed

If your backyard is conducive to having a hummingbird feeder in the open, you can hang the feeder as low as you desire.

While I do not recommend hanging a hummingbird feeder too low, it is possible for anyone to do so as long as they keep a watch on it.

Hang the hummingbird feeder higher if you need to keep an eye on it while it’s in use during the day, and bring it inside for the night if you’re worried about it getting knocked over.

Hummingbird feeders should be hung as high as possible to attract birds, but not higher than two or three feet above the ground.

Hummingbird feeders need to be kept out of direct sunlight for as long as possible, and one way to do this is to hang them at a lower height. Since hummingbirds prefer to dine in the sunshine, exposing the nectar to a little heat won’t bother them.

For this reason, it is best to hang your hummingbird feeder low so that the food remains in the shade as long as possible.

If you don’t have a suitable bracket or limb in the yard to place the feeder higher, you may need to hang it lower to attract hummingbirds. If this is you, it’s acceptable to hang the feeder lower for the time being, with the understanding that you may need to raise it at a later date.

If you have no little children, dogs, or wildlife in the area, a hummingbird feeder can be hung low to the ground.

Putting a hummingbird feeder low to the ground is risky, not so much for you and your loved ones as for the hummers themselves, as they may be easier prey for cats and other predators.

Because of this, we raise our bird feeders to a height of five to six feet, providing the birds with a more commanding view and affording the hummers more time to flee any predators.

Safer hummingbird feeders are always those that are mounted at a greater height.

If you can’t hang it as high as 7 feet, a distance of 5 or 6 feet should suffice. But not always; a higher perch may be required to ward off squirrels, raccoons, and even bears, all of which have been known to attack hummingbird feeders.

Many people, including you, would recommend keeping your structure at least four feet from the ground, however your unique set of circumstances may necessitate a higher minimum.

When there are no predators or pests in your yard, a hummingbird feeder hung close to the ground is a good idea. Similarly, it is seen that pets are not disturbing the hummingbird feeder and children who have been let out to play in the yard are not chasing the birds.

You can certainly hang your hummingbird feeder low if that’s the best way to shield it from the sun. The danger from creatures intent on harming hummingbirds is not yet over, so caution is still required.
